July 4, 1776
We interrupt this edition of What is up with politics today? to bring you What was up with politics then? Many people think of July 4, 1776, as the day America won its freedom. Not so. It isn’t even the day the Declaration of Independence was signed by Hancock et al. It was the day Congress approved the wording for the famous document, but it was not signed for another month. I’m being picky, I know, but I am (or was) a history teacher. Facts matter people! OK, maybe not so much, right? I suppose what matters is that people take time to enjoy their bbq and fireworks and political speeches about what America means to the politician with a microphone in front of his face. That was sarcasm, I know it can be hard to tell with me
For those of you interested in reading the document that was so beautifully written as to impact not only our nation but nations around the world you can go here.
This video is one I used when we came to the Declaration of Independence. I think it is incredible and I hope you enjoy it. It is a powerful document and I think politicians today would do well to read and remember what happens when the government fails to do its job.
If you read the Declaration of Independence did you spot the only woman’s name on the document? I will save my rant for how we are no longer the same country we once were for another day. Today I will say that the Declaration of Independence continues to inspire and awe me. Happy 4th of July.
